It can be much easier to take care of your natural teeth if you know the most common causes of oral health problems for elderly people and develop the right habits to prevent them.

Elderly people are at greater risk of oral health problems for several reasons including but not limited to:

-having a dry mouth due to age or medication. Dry mouth increases the risk of decay and gum disease.

-lack of oral hygiene-due to dexterity issues or time constraints, the elderly can miss out on simple tooth brushing. This in turn leads to plaque build-up, the plaque films are full of bacteria which can be inhaled and lead to aspirational pneumonia.

-Denture sore mouth-bacteria sticks to the surface of a denture which causes sore and painful inflammation under a denture.

-Angular cheilitis-poor fitting dentures of loss of natural dentition, can lead to saliva pooling on the angle of the lips/mouth causing an uncomfortable reaction which can lead to other complications.
